Professor George Williams from the University of New South Wales' Public Law Centre says Australia now has 40 laws dealing with the threat.
He says they include control orders and preventative detention, with few checks and balances.
Professor Williams says the worst laws target people who are not suspects.
"Those that give ASIO the power to have non-suspect citizens detained for up to a week to gather intelligence, other laws that restrict speech including where people might want to reveal problems under the ASIO detention regime," he said.
Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission president John Von Doussa, QC, is also scheduled to speak this afternoon.

Australia: Anti-Muslim “terror plot” unravels
Without waiting for any evidence, Prime Minister John Howard and his ministers immediately claimed that the arrests provided disturbing new proof that “home-grown” terrorists were preparing attacks in Australia. Howard told parliament: “If they have broken the law or been involved in terrorism, well they deserve everything they get.”

Australian media seizes upon Muslim cleric’s comments to whip up xenophobia
There is now an inescapable necessity for all those opposed to militarism and war, and committed to the defence of democratic rights, to develop an independent political opposition to the xenophobic campaign being directed against Muslims. No faction of the media or political establishment has any opposition to the drive to militarise society under the banner of “Australian values”, and all are complicit in the cultivation of anti-Muslim communalism.

Homegrown war criminal's 'a serious problem in Australia'
Jump, scream, run and hide the muswims are coming to get you! Everywhere I turn there is another terrorist. I opened the sugar bowl this morning and there was a terrorist cockroach just waiting to get me, after stealing my sugar mind you. So we must be very alert and very alarmed. How else would a war criminal get re-elected after a holocaust and what looks like a third interest rate rise this year? Mostly, Howard's goals can only be attained, amongst other things, if he pushes race hate buttons and whilst you continue to live in fear.

Home Among the War Criminals |

I've been around the world a couple of times or maybe more, I've seen the sights, I've caused frights, on some foreign shore, But when me mates all ask me the place that I adore, I tell them right away...
Give me a home amongst the war criminals with lots of plump thieves, a AWB or two, a scapegoat, ASIO in the back, police at the front, and an old segregation cell.
You can see us in the media cooking up a scam or Jihad on toast, just Lib and Lab, a front page scare, And later on we'll settle down and mull up on the TV, and watch the public fright.
Give me a home amongst the war criminals with lots of plump thieves, a AWB or two, a scapegoat, ASIO in your back, police out the front, and an old segregation cell.
There's a law up the corner, and a constitution up the street, a brand new place they've opened up where they regulate the heat but I'd trade them all tomorrow for a simple torturing retreat, where the neo-cons call.

Some people like their law with fences all around, others sent to prisons, and some beneath the ground. But me, I like the torture chamber, you know with militants running round, and a dog box out the back.

A Sydney court has been told that defence and prostitution lawyers have agreed on the witnesses who will be called at the committal hearing for nine Sydney men accused of terrorism offences.
The men were arrested in November and December of last year.
They have been charged with conspiring to do an act in preparation for a terrorist act. In short a thing at no place!
Sydney's Central Local Court was expected to hear argument this week on which witnesses would be needed to determine if the men should stand trial.
The committal hearing is now expected to start next year. |
